The original photograph was of Saint Malo, France after Nazi attacks in WWII. This is the time and place where the bulk of the story is told. My intent was to capture the sea surrounding the island and the crumbling confusion felt by the one of the main characters, Marie-Laure, a young blind girl displaced from her home in the midst of the Nazi invasion of Paris.

My intent was to capture the sea surrounding the island and the crumbling confusion felt by the one of the main characters, Marie-Laure, a young blind girl displaced from her home in the midst of the Nazi invasion of Paris.

It’s harsh and painful and very visible, and that why I chose to focus on it. Melinda was unable to share she story for so long but her body was telling the story for much longer, I wanted to convey that pain through the cover.
